Announcements for 3/11/15

1.  Attention Seniors:

 

The graduating class of 2015 is planning a senior trip to Navitat's Canopy Adventures in Asheville, NC, on Thursday, May 21, 2015.  We will participate in the Blue Ridge Experience which includes huge ziplines, jaw dropping speeds, and incredible 360-degree mountain views.  Navitat's Blue Ridge Experience is the high-flying zipline thrill you've been waiting for! This scenic trip will provide endless memories that will last a lifetime.

 

In order to participate in the trip, students must purchase one of the Senior Passports before or at the same time of the purchase of this trip.  (Both purchases must be made on or before April 15, 2015.)

 

Senior Passports are your senior dues.  Purchase yours today along with your Zipline Adventure online at Hough's website!

2.  Hough’s Second Annual Dodge ball tournament will take place on March 27th during 4th block. Dodge ball team sign-ups are now through March 16th. There will be a mandatory meeting for players on March 19th.  Rules will be discussed during this meeting.  Each player on the team must pay $10 to participate, making the total team fee $80. Five teams have already signed up so there are only 3 spots available so get your application and money turned in to Mrs. Waddell or Ms. Festa as soon as possible. Requirements are that all students attending or playing must have a C average in their 4th block class to participate. ONLY juniors and seniors may play in the dodge ball tournament, but all students 9-12 may attend. The winning team plays a secret teacher team! For students interested in attending, tickets will be on sale March 16th through March 27th.  Tickets are $2.00 per student.

 

3.  The GSA will meet this Thursday March 12 in C107 to continue our discussions. This is an important meeting, so please try to attend.

 

4.  There will be an interest meeting for AP Studio Art today, March 10th at 2:30 in C103 Ms. Allen's room. Any students interested in registering for AP Studio Art next year should plan to attend.

 

5.  Did you know that in order to operate a boat in North Carolina, you must have a boater’s license if you were born on or after January 1st, 1988, and in order to operate a PWC (such as a jet ski) you must be 14 AND have your boater’s license as well as proof of age?

 

This year Hough will be hosting a boater’s safety course taught by the United States Coast Guard Auxiliary on April 25th from 8:30 am until 3:30 pm

The course is an 8 hour course that will grant you a boaters license that will be accepted everywhere in the United States.  In this class you will learn tips that could save yours and others lives on the water.  You will learn how to operate a boat and a PWC safely.  You will also receive a booklet, a chart of Lake Norman, and certificates/ID cards upon completion of the course.  This course is open to all Hough staff, students, and family members over the age of 13.  This course is free of charge and pizza will be provided for lunch.  Only 30-40 spots are open so register today and reserve your spot!

6.  HOUGH Open Mic Night is scheduled for Thursday, 3/26 6-8PM

Tickets are $5 at the door.  See Ms. Hickox for more information.

 

7.  The chorus department is taking pre-orders for Krispy Kreme that will be delivered Friday the 13th. If you'd like to place an order, please stop by the chorus room to fill out an order form. All proceeds go toward the chorus trip to Washington, DC.

 

8.  There will be a National Science Honor Society meeting next Tuesday, March 17th right after school.

 

9.  Mr. Shaughnessy’s Husky Time students will report to the Upper C work room starting today.

 

10.  Ms. Peter’s Husky Time students will report to C112 starting today.

 

11.  The Art Club is hosting a Literacy challenge Bookmark-athon this week during lunch!  Hough Art Club is helping organizations Student Rebuild, Save the Children, and the Global Nomads Group to create successful lifelong readers and learners! Bookmarks created will be donated to the literacy program challenge and each one will be matched by the Bezos Family Foundation with a 1$ donation to the organizations mentioned. The Art Club has already made over 200 bookmarks and we would love to have your help! Please stop by our table during lunch and help donate your creativity to an important cause.

 

12.  All Students are reminded that registration cards are due by Friday, March 13th to Mrs. Estrada in Student Services.  You must key in your course selections into PowerSchool prior to turning your card in.  Failure to turn in your registration card will impact your options for classes next year.

3.  Attention Huskies, course registration for the 2015-2016 school year will begin on Monday, March 2, 2015.  Head on over to the Student Services Website to learn about this year’s new registration process and get a head start on planning for your future.

 

4.  The World Language Department is hosting our school’s 1st International Week during April 1 & 2.

 

What is the International Week? Every March, schools and other learning institutions across the United States celebrate World Language Week or International Week. It is a great opportunity to promote cultural celebrations and diversity awareness in our classes and in our school.

 

Our theme is "Celebrate the World". All students are welcome to bring a flag of their choice to Mrs. Hammond to C-111 to build the International spirit in our cafeteria. Flags are due by March 9th.  Please write your name on the flag so we know who it belongs to.

 

5.  There will a National English Honor Society Interest Meeting on Monday March 9th in Ms. Misko's room A111.  We will discuss the application process and the purpose of the club for the 2015-2016 school year.  This is open to only sophomores and juniors.

 

6.  There will be an interest meeting for AP Studio Art on Tuesday March 10th at 2:30 in C103 Ms Allen's room. Any students interested in registering for AP Studio Art next year should plan to attend.

3.  FBLA Celebrates Black History Month with a fact of the day!

 

Friday, 2/27: In 2009, Barack Obama Democrat from Chicago, becomes the first African-American president and the country's 44th president.

 

4.  Big Mike, of platinum R&B group Day 26, is having his Do It Big talent show and concert at the Northwest School of Performing Arts on Saturday March 28 at 7pm. The talent show will be hosted by Dennis Reed of Inspire The Fire and will feature CMS's best singers and dancers. If you would like to compete in the showcase, you can pre-register at www.iambigmike.com. The talent show winner will receive a cash prize and a recording or choreography session with Big Mike. You can meet Mike in person during lunch on Thursday March 5 and advanced tickets will be available for purchase for $5 in the school's cafeteria. Big Mike reminds you that in all you do, Do It Big Or Not At All!

 

5.  FCA is hosting a school supplies drive for Ada Jenkins. All donations can be dropped off in Ms. Hansen's room A107. Thank you!

 

6. The next GSA meeting will be Thursday March 5, from 2:30-3:30 pm. We will have a guest speaker from Time Out Youth.

 

7.  National Art Honor Society Inductions will be held at Spirit Square Center for the Arts in Charlotte on Friday March 6 from 4-5 pm. Invitations were passed out at last meeting. We will meet at Hough directly after school to carpool.
